40 & 50 brunswick place, hove
construction cost: £450,000 project stage: completed
conservation... the project’s brief was to renovate two grade II listed buildings in the brunswick conservation area of brighton & hove for the local council. the buildings are arranged as houses of multiple occupation and provide managed housing for some of society’s more vulnerable people in self contained units with additional office space for the building managers.
there were a number of issues that needed to be overcome to realise this project and provide a 21st century buildings for both the residents and managers. whilst working on listed buildings provided many challenges in terms of respecting the properties heritage, it was also important to ensure that the living environments did not become stale and repetitive due to the restricted budget.
as the buildings were constructed in the 1800’s there were many elements that needed upgrading to be fit for purpose, such as; installing central heating, upgrading existing fire escape provision through installation of a sprinkler system and alarm, providing solar collectors to offset the cost of the central heating. all of these improvements were carried out without damaging the appearance or detailing of the original buildings.
