28 gloucester street, brighton
construction cost: £750,000 project stage: completed
sensitive... dating from the mid-19th century this two storey landlocked building had served a variety of purposes until planning permission was sought in 2001 to convert into four live / work units. the site is in the centre of the north laine conservation area and in close proximity to brighton station making it an ideal location for this form of development reducing the dependency of its occupants on motor vehicles.
the original structure and envelope was retained and adapted to form highly insulated, independent, contemporary units. communal outside space was incorporated into the design from an early stage, to encourage the development of good relations between residents in this landlocked and isolated site.
